D&D Decorators of Fenwick in Ayrshire have used the Sadolin Ultra Highly Translucent Woodstain system to great effect at the timber-clad Helix Building at the West of Scotland Science Park in Glasgow.
Sadolin’s premium translucent woodstain system was specified by Grant Cameron of Speyroc Property Developers and Building Contractors – responsible for the refurbishment of the Helix building – in order to provide the timber cladding with long lasting protection from the extremes of the Scottish climate, whilst maintaining the natural appearance of the wood.
Sadolin Ultra gives timber a microporous ‘jacket’, providing a waterproof finish that allows the wood to breathe naturally. It offers up to seven years of lasting weather protection, and with a new alkyd-based formulation that requires less solvent to deliver its performance, provides a sustainable solution with excellent substrate penetration and superior flexibility. The high quality resins in the formulation allow the woodstain to move and flex naturally with the wood to resist the risk of blistering and flaking, no matter how harsh the climate.
Ultra also features advanced UV-Active technology and despite its superior translucency, contains a host of light absorbers that deliver extra protection against radiation damage and fading in areas prone to high sun exposure.
At the Helix Building, D&D Decorators applied a three coat Ultra system – a clear Ultra basecoat followed by two top coats of Ultra Highly Translucent Woodstain which gradually introduced colour and richness to the timber cladding and at the same time emphasised its natural detail and graining. “The three coats went on beautifully, as we knew they would,” said Scott Davidson, D&D Contracts Manager, “We’ve used Sadolin Ultra on several new build and refurb projects now and it really is a lovely woodcare system that my team are happy to work with. It delivers a clear consistent finish every time without obscuring any of the natural wood appearance.”
Grant Cameron said: “I’ve specified Sadolin Ultra before and know that the coating system offers a high degree of protection and a longer than average lifespan, so I had every confidence in specifying it for the Helix Building. I am very happy with the results that D&D have produced. The building looks fantastic.”
