Vibrant and colourful is the immediate impression when approaching
the newly constructed Sector Four (or as it is more affectionately
known, the Fishing Village) on St Mary’s Island in Kent. The
spectacular combination of vernacular architecture and the spirit
of the Kent fishing tradition has been achieved with the help of
Sadolin Superdec.
The Fishing Village is part of a huge new build construction scheme,
emerging from the former Royal Naval Dockyards. The mixed use St
Mary’s Island project was begun in 1996 as a joint venture
between SEEDA (South East England Development Association) and Countryside
Properties, with award winning PCKO Architects chosen for the riverside
sectors of the development. When complete, the entire area will
have up to 2000 new eco-friendly homes.
The scheme presents one of the tallest timber framed blocks of
flats in the country standing five storeys high, and by the end
of the construction programme, scheduled for 2005, another six will
accompany it. The traditional exterior design feature of all of
the timber-framed houses includes integral wooden beamed balconies
and extensive use of weatherboard shiplap cladding. Sadolin Superdec was specified in a variety of its 45 colours to add protection and
visual enhancement to the exteriors. A combination of alkyd and
acrylic resins, Superdec offers the flexibility needed to resist
cracking, peeling and flaking.
Normally specified as a two-coat application, Superdec provides
an alternative to traditional three or four coat solvent-borne paint
systems, offering cost and performance benefits.
“The weatherboard cladding comprises a mix of materials,”
explains architect, Jacek Pencakowski of PCKO. “We went through
a comprehensive discussion forum to determine the most suitable
coating that would bring out the value and structure of the material
to its best advantage.
Sadolin Superdec fulfilled the criteria and was specified in a
variety of bold colours. In addition, the site is very exposed being
on the estuary of the river. Protection against the elements was
therefore a paramount consideration when specifying a coating.”
