How to oil a kitchen worktop:

1. Make sure the counter is clean and dry.

2. If the surface is new and uneven or old and discoloured, gently sand in the direction of the grain - taking care to dust well afterwards. If excessive discolouring has taken place, ensure it is sanded back to a clean, bright wood.

3. Dampen a clean cloth with methylated spirits and wipe over the surface to remove grease and resin.

4. Then apply the oil in the direction of the grain using a full flowing coat. After 10 minutes remove any excess with a clean lint free cloth.
