Advice - In the home
Floors

How to varnish a floor:

New Floors:

1. Allow the floor to acclimatise to your home before treating to avoid shrinking and swelling.

2. Remove dirt and grease with methylated spirits or cellulose thinners.

Existing Floors:

1. Screw/punch all screws and nail heads below the surface and fill any voids with woodfiller.

2. If removal of existing finish is required, hire a drum and edge sander.

3. Sand to provide a 'key' for the coating and remove all dust.

4. Wipe with a cloth dampened with methylated spirits or cellulose thinners.

Application:

1. Start in the far corner of the room.

2. Always finish in the direction of the grain.

3. Work quickly, coat 3-4 boards at a time to avoid overlaps.

4.For best results, we would recommend roller application for clear varnish only.

5. Lightly sand the first coat on bare timber to remove any surface roughness/raised grain. Remove all dust before applying further coats.

Afterwards:

Leave for 4 hours before using the room. Wait 24 hours before putting back furniture and at least 7 days before replacing rugs.
