New Floors

  1. Allow the floor to acclimatise to your home environment before treating. This way, you’ll avoid problems with shrinkage or swelling.
  2. Remove dirt, grease and other contaminants by cleaning with a cloth dampened with methylated spirits or cellulose thinners.

Existing Floors

  1. Ensure all screws and nail heads are screwed/punched below the timber surface and fill any voids with a suitable woodfiller.
  2. Depending on the condition of the existing coating, and whether carpet or tiles have covered the floor, you may have to remove the existing finish. This can be done by hiring a drum and edge sander.
  3. When sanding, wear a protective mask and carry out the final sanding in the direction of the grain to avoid sanding marks when the floor is coated.
  4. Remove dirt, grease and other contaminants by cleaning with a cloth dampened with methylated spirits or cellulose thinners.

If removal of existing coating is not required:

  1. Clean the surface to remove dirt, grease and other contaminants, which might impair the adhesion of the coating.
  2. Sand the floor to provide a ‘key’ for the coating and remove all dust.

Application

  1. Take as wide a brush as you can comfortably handle and load it with Sadolin Extra Durable Floor Varnish, or pour a small quantity onto the floor.
  2. Take care to make sure you follow the coverage guide on the tin. For best results always apply in the direction of the grain.
  3. Start in the far corner of the room.
  4. Brush out evenly in the direction of the grain and work as quickly as possible, coating over 3-4 boards at a time to avoid overlaps.
  5. Apply the recommended number of coats and allow the appropriate drying time between applications.

Afterwards

Although the new floor covering will dry very quickly, wait 24 hours before putting back tables, chairs, bookcases, etc. It’s best to wait at least 7 days before replacing rugs.
